MT5 brokers and prop firm accounts: journal any MT5 terminal
The app reads your own MetaTrader 5 terminal, so it works with the broker you already use. No broker login, no waiting for an integration.
It works with the broker you already have
AI Trading Journal does not connect to a broker. It reads your closed trades from the MetaTrader 5 terminal installed on your own Windows PC. So if your broker lets you trade on MT5 desktop, the app can journal that account. There is no broker list to wait for and no broker login to hand over.
How it finds your account
- The setup wizard scans your PC for installed MT5 terminals, including broker-branded ones.
- It checks each terminal, shows the logged-in account and server, and you pick the one to journal.
- It then creates your journal, imports your history and keeps it up to date about every 5 minutes. Notion is an optional extra.
- Each MT5 account gets its own database, and you can pause any account.
The full walkthrough is in how the journal on your PC works; the optional Notion copy is covered in how to journal MT5 trades in Notion automatically.
Broker-by-broker notes
These pages describe what each broker says about its own MT5 platform, with the date we checked, and what that means for your journal. We are not affiliated with any broker.
Broker names and logos belong to their owners and are shown only to tell you which MT5 brokers the journal can read. AI Trading Journal is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them.
We add brokers only when we can verify what they state on their own site.
Prop firm and challenge accounts
If your challenge or funded account is an MT5 account you can open in the desktop terminal, the app journals it like any other. Rules about third-party software differ between firms, so check your firm's rules first. See the journal for prop firm traders.
If your terminal is not found
- Make sure MT5 is installed on this same PC, not only on a phone or in a browser.
- Open the terminal and log in to your account at least once so it is the active account.
- If you have several terminals, the wizard lists them so you can pick the right one.
- Broker-branded terminals count: it is the MT5 terminal on your PC that matters, not the broker.
What the app records from each account
For every closed position: symbol, direction, volume, open and close time, entry and exit price, stop loss, take profit and profit or loss, with partial closes combined and each hedged position kept separate. A daily row adds the result, win rate and drawdown. Your Notes are never overwritten.
What you need
- A Windows 10 or 11 PC with the MT5 desktop terminal installed and logged in
- Optional: a free Notion account and a Notion integration token, only if you want a Notion copy
- A 7-day free trial, then a one-time $19.99 purchase
What does not work
- MetaTrader 4, cTrader and other platforms
- Mac or mobile-only MT5 (the app runs on Windows)
- Web-only MT5 with no desktop terminal
An honest note on privacy. Notion is itself a cloud service, so your trades do sit on Notion's servers, in your own workspace, under your own account and token. What AI Trading Journal removes is the extra middleman: there is no separate journal vendor holding your trades and no broker login sent to a website. No tool is risk-free, so protect your accounts, including Notion if you connect it, with a strong password and two-step verification.
What each broker page says about position mode (own pages, read 8 October 2026)
Whether an account is netting or hedging changes how your history looks, and it is set by the broker. These are the statements we found on the brokers' own pages. Confirm the mode of your own account with your broker.
| Broker | What its page says |
|---|---|
| IC (IC Markets) | No first-in-first-out rule, so traders can hedge positions |
| Exness | MetaTrader 5 uses a hedging mode, allowing multiple and opposite positions on one instrument |
| Admirals | CFD accounts are configured for hedging; its investing offering uses netting |
| HFM | Hedging is listed among MT5's features |
| FXTM | Its MT5 comparison table lists both netting and hedging |
| Eightcap | MT5 supports netting or hedging modes |
| FP Markets | Hedging is listed among its MT5 features |
The hedging versus netting guide shows the same trades recorded in both modes and what to journal in each.
Account types the brokers list for MT5
| Broker | Account types named on its MT5 page |
|---|---|
| IC (IC Markets) | Raw Pricing and Standard |
| Admirals | Trade.MT5, Zero.MT5 and Invest.MT5 |
| Tickmill | Classic, Raw and Islamic |
| ThinkMarkets | Standard and ThinkZero |
| FXTM | Advantage, Rewards Plus, Advantage Stocks and a demo account |
If you hold more than one account type, give each its own Notion database and compare net results after commission and swap. The pages for each broker suggest how.
A short pre-setup checklist
- MT5 desktop is installed on this Windows PC, and not only on a phone or in a browser.
- You have logged in to the account you want to journal, and the account number in the title bar is the right one.
- You know whether the account is demo or real, and you will keep them in separate databases.
- If you want the optional Notion copy: you have created a Notion integration and shared one page with it.
- You have checked your firm's or broker's terms on third-party software, if they have any.
When the app does not find your terminal
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No terminals listed | MT5 not installed on this PC, or never opened | Install it, open it and log in once |
| Terminal listed but no account | Not logged in | Log in to the account, then reopen the setup |
| Wrong account shown | Another account is active in that terminal | Log in to the one you want |
| Several terminals listed | Broker-branded and standard terminals installed | Pick the one that holds your account |
| Only a browser or phone account | The app needs the desktop terminal | Install the desktop terminal from your broker |
More help is in the setup guide, and MT5 trade history not showing covers the case where the history itself looks empty.
