MT5 trade history not showing: 8 things to check
Missing trades in MetaTrader 5 are usually still there and hidden by the view. Work through these checks in order.
Start with the simplest causes
When closed trades seem to be missing from MetaTrader 5, the trades are usually still there and the view is hiding them. Work through these in order.
1. Check the date range
The History tab only shows the period you select. Right-click inside it and choose a period such as the last week, last month, last three months, last year, all history, or a custom period. A recent trade can seem missing because the period is too narrow, or an old trade because it is too short.
2. Change the view
Right-click in the History tab and switch between Positions, Orders and Deals (and the combined orders and deals view if your build has it). Each shows different records. A trade can look absent in one view and present in another. Positions shows one row per closed trade and is the easiest to read.
3. Make sure it is the right account
Demo and live accounts, or two live accounts, have separate histories. Check the account number and server at the top of the Navigator or in the Trade tab, and log in to the account you traded.
4. Refresh the connection
Disconnect and log in again, or restart the terminal, so it reloads history from the server. Then reopen the History tab and re-select the period.
5. Look at the Journal tab
Open the Journal tab in the Toolbox and look at the time of the trade. Rejections, requotes and disconnections are logged there. If a trade was rejected, it never became a position, so it will not appear in History. See the MT5 Journal tab explained.
6. Consider server-side limits
History comes from your broker's server. Some brokers keep a limited period of history on the server or archive old accounts, so very old trades may not be available in the terminal. If a trade you are sure you made is missing from the older period, ask your broker.
7. Compare with the mobile app or web terminal
Open the same account in another MetaTrader client. If the trade appears there, the problem is a local view or cache issue. If it is missing everywhere, the server has no record of it.
8. Contact your broker with details
If the trade is still missing, send your broker the account number, the symbol, the approximate time and any ticket number. Only the server's record can confirm whether a trade was executed.
A tip once you have found it
Once your history shows, export it so you have your own copy: see how to export your MT5 trade history. If you keep an automatic journal, every closed trade is also stored in your own journal on your PC, so you have a second record. See the MT5 trading statistics guide for what to do with the data.
Prefer not to dig through the History tab? AI Trading Journal reads your closed trades from your own MT5 terminal and saves one entry in your own journal on your PC (and one Notion row, if you connect Notion) per closed position about every 5 minutes, with open and close time, size, prices, stop, target and profit. It is read-only, needs no broker login, and is Windows-only, with a 7-day free trial and a one-time $19.99.

Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Recent trades missing, older ones present | Period set too short or loading incomplete | Choose all history and wait a moment |
| Trade present in Deals but not Positions | The position is still open or not fully closed | Check the Trade tab for an open position |
| Only some trades from a day appear | Partial closes shown as separate deals | Switch to Positions to see them combined |
| The history is empty for a new account | No trades yet, or a different account selected | Confirm the account number and server |
| Old trades missing, new ones fine | Server keeps limited history | Ask your broker; keep your own exports |
| Trade not in any view on any device | The server has no record | Contact the broker with details |
Find a trade by its ticket
If you have a ticket number from a confirmation message or an old report, search for it. Open the History tab in Deals view, sort by the ticket or order column, and check whether it is there. If the ticket exists but its position does not, it may belong to a position that is still open, or one that was closed in a later deal. Giving your broker the ticket number is the fastest way to have them check their side.
Dates and server time
MT5 shows times in your broker's server time. A trade closed late in the evening in your own time can belong to the next day on the server, so it may appear on a different date than you expect, or just outside the period you selected. If a trade seems to be on the wrong day, check the time zone of the server before you suspect the history.
Partial closes that look like missing trades
If you closed a position in stages, the Deals view shows several rows and the Positions view shows one. A journal that counts deals will report a different number of trades from one that counts positions, and one of them will look wrong. Decide which you are counting, and keep it consistent. See hedging versus netting for how the modes change what you see.
Stop it from happening again
- Export your history every month and keep the files (see the export guide).
- Keep a second record, such as a spreadsheet or an automatic journal.
- Note the ticket number of important trades in your journal.
- After a broker change or an account migration, export before the old account is closed.
Once your history is visible, two follow-ups help: how to show the trades on the chart and what the comment tags such as [sl], [tp] and so: mean.
Panel missing altogether? See MT5 Toolbox not showing: five fixes. Odd rows in the table? Balance rows are deposits, not trades.
How to open trade history on MetaTrader 5, in short: press Ctrl+T (or open the View menu and choose Toolbox), click the History tab, then right-click inside it to pick the period and whether to show positions, orders or deals. Menu wording varies by build, so check your own terminal. Once it shows, measure how long trades stayed open in MT5 trade holding time.
How to open your trade history in MetaTrader 5
If you only need to find the history rather than fix an empty one, open the Terminal window from the View menu or press Ctrl+T, then click the History tab at the bottom. Right-click inside the list to choose the period, such as today, the last week, the last month or a custom range, and to switch the view between positions, orders and deals. Your deals appear only for the period you choose, which is why a new terminal often looks empty until you widen it. On a phone or in a web terminal the history sits in a different place, but this site and the AI Trading Journal app are about the Windows desktop terminal. For exporting the list, see how to export MT5 trade history, and for the live side of the Terminal window see floating versus realised profit. Menu names vary between builds, so check your own terminal.
Seeing gaps on a chart instead of missing trades? That is price data, not your account record: see MT5 price history vs account history.
Checking from your phone? MT5 trade history on phone shows where the mobile History screen is. Missing orders rather than trades? See pending orders in history.
