Journal your OANDA MT5 trades automatically
If you trade with OANDA on MetaTrader 5 for Windows, AI Trading Journal can save every closed trade in your own journal on your PC (with an optional copy in your own Notion workspace) about every 5 minutes. It reads your OANDA terminal on your PC. It does not connect to OANDA, so you never give anyone your OANDA login.
What OANDA says about MT5
Facts below are from OANDA's own pages (https://www.oanda.com/bvi-en/cfds/platforms/metatrader-5/), checked on 11 October 2026. Offers change, so check the broker's site for the latest. We are not affiliated with OANDA, and nothing here is a recommendation of it.
- Its OANDA Global Markets MT5 page says MT5 is offered on web, desktop and mobile, with iOS and Android apps and a web version that needs no extra software.
- It lists a built-in Depth of Market tool and an economic calendar, available on desktop and mobile.
- It says MT5 has 21 chart timeframes, from one minute to monthly, and that the web version offers 30 technical indicators.
- This is OANDA's British Virgin Islands site. The page names no regulator, and other OANDA regional sites may describe MT5 differently, so read the page for the site your account is with.
What that means for your journal
OANDA runs separate regional sites, and your account belongs to one of them. The app only reads the MT5 terminal on your PC, so the region does not change how the journal works, but it does change the servers and instruments you see. Note the region in your journal so a trade from one OANDA account is never compared with a different entity's costs.
Journaling tips for OANDA accounts
- Add the OANDA site or region to the Notes field of your first journal entry, so you remember which account type you were on.
- If you use the web version of MT5, remember the app reads the desktop terminal on your PC, not the browser session.
- Review results by instrument; OANDA's lists differ by region, so compare like with like.
How to set it up
- Install the MT5 terminal on your Windows PC and log in to your OANDA account.
- Install AI Trading Journal, click Add Account and pick your logged-in account. It finds your terminal and account.
- Click Create my journal. The app imports your whole history and keeps it up to date about every 5 minutes.
- Optional: click Connect Notion to keep a copy of the journal in your own Notion workspace.
What each journal entry contains
For every closed position: symbol, direction, volume, open and close time, entry and exit price, stop loss, take profit and profit or loss, plus your own setup, emotion, rating, tags, notes and screenshots, which a sync never overwrites. A daily row shows the day's result, win rate and drawdown.
A weekly review for your OANDA trades
- Which symbols made or lost money this week?
- Which session were most of the losses taken in?
- Did lot size stay inside your plan?
- How many trades would you not take again?
The weekly trading review checklist turns these into a 20-minute routine, and win rate, profit factor and expectancy explained shows how to read the numbers.
Privacy and cost compared with a cloud journal
| Question | Cloud journal | AI Trading Journal |
|---|---|---|
| Where do your trades live? | On the vendor's servers | On your own PC; they do not pass through our servers |
| Does it need your broker login? | Many connect with account login and investor password, or an Expert Advisor that sends data out | No. It reads your own logged-in MT5 terminal on your PC |
| What if you stop paying? | Access and history can end with the subscription | Your Notion journal stays yours |
| Can it place trades? | Read-only access is typical, but you are trusting the vendor | It is read-only by design; it never places, changes or closes a trade |
An honest note on privacy. Notion is itself a cloud service, so your trades do sit on Notion's servers, in your own workspace, under your own account and token. What AI Trading Journal removes is the extra middleman: there is no separate journal vendor holding your trades and no broker login sent to a website. No tool is risk-free, so protect your accounts, including Notion if you connect it, with a strong password and two-step verification.
Limits to know
- Windows and MetaTrader 5 desktop only.
- Trades sync every 5 minutes, not instantly.
- One computer at a time per license.
- No trade replay, backtesting or AI coach.

More from OANDA's MT5 page (read 11 October 2026)
- It describes the Depth of Market tool as a way to see pricing and spreads for larger trade sizes before you place them.
- It says OANDA Group has more than 25 years of experience. That is the firm's own statement, and we have not checked it.
- It is titled for OANDA Global Markets and links to separate regional sites, which is why two OANDA clients can see different details.
Reviewing costs when the region matters
Because the account type and the entity differ between regions, the cleanest comparison is your own history after every cost. Put the region in the Notes field and compare net results per instrument once you have a few weeks of trades.
| Instrument | Trades | Average lots | Net result | Net per lot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EURUSD (hypothetical) | 30 | 0.40 | +$96 | +$8.0 |
| XAUUSD (hypothetical) | 18 | 0.20 | -$24 | -$6.7 |
The numbers above are invented to show the layout. Your journal already has the real ones. See trading performance analysis for how to read a gap like this without over-trusting a short sample.
What to check before relying on any broker page
A broker's platform page is marketing as well as documentation. It tells you what the firm wants you to know, not every condition attached to your account. Read the account terms for your own region, confirm which legal entity holds your account, and never risk more than you can afford to lose. This page is general information, not a recommendation of any broker.
