Notion template vs an automatic Notion trading journal

Both can put your journal in your own Notion workspace. One makes you type every trade. Here is when that is fine and when it is not.

Notion has no built-in connection to MetaTrader 5, so a template on its own cannot fetch trades. Some templates advertise automation but still ask you for open and close prices and times; read the description carefully.

Questions to ask about any Notion trading template

A fair 30-day test

If you are undecided, run the template for a month and count two numbers: the trades you took and the trades you logged. If they match, the template is working and there is no reason to pay for anything. If you logged 80% or less, the missing trades are what a template cannot fix on its own, and those are exactly the days you most need to review. This costs nothing and settles the question with your own behaviour rather than anyone's opinion.

What the optional Notion copy contains

If you connect Notion, AI Trading Journal creates two linked databases in your own Notion workspace: a daily database (one row per trading day with net profit or loss, number of trades, win rate and drawdown) and a Trades database with one row per closed position, with partial closes combined. Each trade carries volume, entry and exit price, stop loss, take profit, open and close time and profit or loss, plus a Notes field that the app never overwrites. You can still add your own pages, templates and views around those databases; what you give up is the freedom to restructure the two databases the app writes to.

Combining both approaches

The approaches are not exclusive. A reasonable setup is automatic data for the trade facts and a Notion page of your own design for the review: a weekly template with the questions you care about, linked to the trades that week. That way you keep the flexibility that is the main strength of a Notion template without typing numbers MT5 already knows. See the Notion trading plan template and the weekly review checklist for ideas.

Cost over time

A free template costs nothing in money and some time per trade. The app costs $19.99 once after the 7-day trial and removes most of the typing. The rest depends on how many trades you take: at 2, 5 or 10 trades per day and about a minute per trade, typing costs roughly 8, 21 or 42 hours a year (an illustration, since your pace will differ). Whether that time is worth $19.99 is your call, and for a handful of trades a week the answer may well be no.

Whichever route you choose, set a fixed time each week for the review. The data only pays off if somebody reads it, and a calendar reminder does more for most traders than any extra property in a database.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Notion template and AI Trading Journal together?
Both can live in your Notion workspace if you connect Notion, but the app creates its own databases. Many traders use it for the trade data and keep a separate Notion page for weekly reviews.
Does Notion connect to MT5?
Not natively. Something has to write to Notion, whether your typing, an Expert Advisor or an app.
Is a Notion template enough?
It can be, if you keep it up to date. The usual failure is skipped days.
