Losing streaks in trading: how long is normal?
Losing runs are longer than they feel. Here are the exact odds for different win rates, and a plan for getting through one.
Losing streaks are longer than they feel
Wins and losses tend to cluster, even for a sound strategy. People expect a 50% system to alternate; it does not. The table below shows, assuming each trade is independent, the chance of at least one run of that many losses in a row within 100 trades. These are exact figures from a simple model, not estimates from a trading blog.
| Win rate | 3 in a row | 4 | 5 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30% | 100% | 100% | 99.9% | 99.0% | 85.8% | 58.0% |
| 40% | 100% | 99.9% | 97.6% | 87.3% | 49.0% | 20.5% |
| 50% | 100% | 97.3% | 81.0% | 54.6% | 17.0% | 4.4% |
| 60% | 98.8% | 80.1% | 45.9% | 21.2% | 3.6% | 0.6% |
| 70% | 86.4% | 43.3% | 15.3% | 4.8% | 0.4% | 0.0% |
Read it like this: with a 60% win rate there is about a 46% chance of at least five losses in a row somewhere in 100 trades. With 50%, it is 81%. Try your own numbers with the losing streak calculator.
Real markets are not perfectly independent coin flips, so treat these as a reasonable baseline, not a guarantee. If your strategy's losses are correlated (for example, all trades in one regime), streaks can be worse.
What this means in practice
- A streak that matches the odds is not evidence your strategy has stopped working.
- Know your normal worst streak before it happens, from the table or from your own journal.
- If a streak is much longer than your baseline suggests, review the trades before changing anything.
How to handle a losing streak
- Stop and check whether you followed your rules on each losing trade.
- Sort each loss: good trade that lost, or mistake?
- If you broke rules, fix that first. If you followed them, the streak may be ordinary variance.
- Reduce size, or pause, rather than raising size to win it back.
- Apply your daily loss limit strictly during a streak.
- Write down the lesson, if any, and the one thing you will do next.
The danger is what you do during it
The streak itself is usually survivable. The damage comes from revenge trades, larger sizes and rule breaking while you are in it. See the revenge trading guide, trading tilt and the drawdown recovery calculator, which shows why deep losses are so hard to climb back from.
Use your own data
Your journal gives you your real win rate and your longest streaks so far. AI Trading Journal records every closed MT5 position in your own journal, so counting consecutive losses is a sorted list away.
Prefer not to dig through the History tab? AI Trading Journal reads your closed trades from your own MT5 terminal and saves one entry in your own journal on your PC (and one Notion row, if you connect Notion) per closed position about every 5 minutes, with open and close time, size, prices, stop, target and profit. It is read-only, needs no broker login, and is Windows-only, with a 7-day free trial and a one-time $19.99.
A journal is a tool for noticing patterns, not a treatment. If trading is affecting your wellbeing, talk to someone you trust or a qualified professional. This page is general education, not trading, investment or medical advice.
What risk per trade survives a streak?
Work backwards from the drawdown you could tolerate. If you risk a fixed percentage of the current balance on each trade, a streak of n losses costs 1 - (1 - risk)^n of the account. Solving for the risk that keeps a streak of n within a chosen drawdown gives risk = 1 - (1 - drawdown)^(1/n). The table shows the result for a few hypothetical tolerances:
| Drawdown you can tolerate | Survive 5 losses | Survive 8 losses | Survive 10 losses | Survive 15 losses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 1.02% | 0.64% | 0.51% | 0.34% |
| 10% | 2.09% | 1.31% | 1.05% | 0.70% |
| 15% | 3.20% | 2.01% | 1.61% | 1.08% |
| 20% | 4.36% | 2.75% | 2.21% | 1.48% |
To stay within a 10% drawdown through ten consecutive losses you would need to risk about 1.05% per trade or less. To survive fifteen losses inside 10%, about 0.70%. These are not recommendations; they show how the risk per trade you choose today fixes the worst streak you can afford. Pick the streak you are prepared to see (the table above says how likely it is), then see what risk follows.
A streak log (hypothetical)
| Trade | Result | Followed plan? | Good trade that lost, or mistake? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | -1R | Yes | Good trade that lost |
| 2 | -1R | Yes | Good trade that lost |
| 3 | -1.4R | No (stop moved) | Mistake |
| 4 | -1R | Yes | Good trade that lost |
| 5 | Stopped for the day | Yes | Rule: daily limit reached |
This streak had four losses, one of which was a mistake, and ended with the trader following the daily limit. The cost of the mistake was 0.4R more than planned. That is the kind of detail the log is for: the streak itself was ordinary, and the lesson was the moved stop.
Find your own longest streak
- Sort your closed trades by close time.
- Add a column that marks each trade as win or loss.
- In a spreadsheet, add a second column that counts the current losing run: if the trade is a loss, add one to the previous value, otherwise reset to zero.
- The largest number in that column is your longest streak so far. Compare it with the table above for your win rate and number of trades.
- In Notion, sort the Trades database by close time and count the consecutive loss rows by eye or with a formula property that references the previous row.
A pre-agreed plan for a streak
| After this many losses in a row | Example action (write your own) |
|---|---|
| 3 | Take a five-minute break and review whether the losses followed the plan |
| 5 | Trade at half size for the next three trades |
| 8 | Stop for the day; review all trades at the end of the week |
| Daily loss limit reached | Stop, whatever the count |
The thresholds are examples. The value is in agreeing them in advance, so the middle of a streak is not the time to negotiate. For related behaviour, see trading tilt, revenge trading and the losing streak calculator.
